How Rarity Is Determined
Song score — 6 factors
- Instrument rarity: instrument used at less than 5% of performances [0–4 score]
- Solo vs band rarity: performed solo vs band (or vice-versa) at less than 5% [0–4 score]
- Rarely played: performed 5 or less total times [1, 2, 3, 4, 8 score]
- Unreleased: unreleased at the time [+1]; still unreleased [+2]
- Debut: career debuts are identified [+1]
- Bust-out: greater than 300 shows between performances [0–4 score]
Show score — 2 factors
- Songs: score based on the number and degree of song rarities
- Setlist uniqueness: an added score for the degree of setlist uniqueness (order not considered)
Exclusions
- Excludes songs where Neil is only a contributor (e.g., “Wooden Ships,” “For What It’s Worth,” Lukas Nelson songs, etc.)
- Only shows with 5 or more Neil contributing songs are counted
- The Bob Dylan & Pegi Young tours are not considered
Notes
- This is just an exercise to see if an algorithm can match what recording collectors have considered the most sought-after shows.
- Song scores of 3 and below don't appear to be very useful by themselves.
- The most important attribute of all — performance quality — isn’t factored in at all.
